 Relationship Compatibility Using the Moon, Mercury and North Node Placements

When weighing the chances of a partnership working out, much attention has been given to Sun signs in the world of compatibility. Most people easily understand their own Sun sign and the Sun sign of their potential partner, but compatibility based on the alignment of planets at the time and place of your birth, is much more complex than the Sun alignment alone. Compatibility can be researched and interpreted at intricate levels. It goes really deep and gets really detailed if you take the time to either research your planetary alignments on your own or have a natal chart interpretation completed for you and your partner (I recommend this method).

Though I could spend days typing up the many different ways of analyzing compatibility based on natal charts, today I want to offer three ways you can more deeply look into the planetary positioning of you and your person of interest, to decide if your relationship will be smooth-sailing or a rocky road! Be mindful that this advice will only help you chip the iceberg …. but you’ve got to start somewhere!


The Moon

The first luminary I love to dive into is the positioning of the Moon in the chart of both persons. The placement of the Moon at the time of birth, unveils what type of energy we are most comfortable (and uncomfortable with). It shows us what our insecurities will be in this lifetime, how deep we waddle in our emotions and what we need from our environments and others to feel safe and secure.

The Moon shows us far beyond materialism and appearances, it’s not about the show we put on for others or how we make ourselves appear to the world. Instead, it’s all about uncovering the deepest, most covered parts of you, it’s how you really feel, who you truly are deep inside.

Comparing the Moon placements of two people is like peeling off the skin of two apples and looking at the cores side by side. Ideally, we want those cores to compliment one another. Seeing major red flags in this placement would make me raise an eyebrow. We aren’t looking for the two to be the same (that would be terribly boring) but for example, if partner #1 had a Moon in Cancer, I would look for his/her partner to have a Moon sign in a house that would share an understanding of the family unit and deep emotions and empathy for others. I might also hope that partner #2 has a Moon placement that offers some strength to balance the sensitivity and giving nature of the Moon in Cancer person. Many different combinations could work here, what we are looking for is balance and want to be able to ask ourselves “Could these two people feel at home and comfortable with one another?”.


North Node

I’m sure most Astrology goers would want or expect me to speak about the Venus placement next. Although extremely important when considering compatibility … if I could only choose three placements to study, I would next dive into the North node placements of the potential couple. The North node gives insight to the energy we are running towards and developing into. When we are high functioning and willing to become more refined versions of ourselves, the North node shows us who we are meant to become and how! In few words, it gives us a glimpse of our future selves. Using this information, we can gauge if the two are headed in similar directions. Even if they aren’t, the question becomes “Can these two people be supportive and understanding of the direction that the other is traveling toward?”

Mercury

Great communication can create peace in a partnership, while poor communication can cause great chaos! It’s this fact that would cause me to choose Mercury as my final planet to study the compatibility between two lovebirds. Mercury gives us a glimpse into how we each communicate, what we enjoy talking about, our learning style and how we process information. It can let us know if we are meant to be a chatty Kathy or are more careful in our thoughts and word choice. In a perfect world, I would look for the positioning of the two Mercury signs to fall in houses that are in complimenting and balancing elements. For example, if partner #1 had his/her Mercury placed in a house ruled by Fire, I would tread lightly if partner #2 also had a Mercury position ruled by Fire. My concern here would be that the two would be too in-tune with ego and would be so set on expressing their point of view in serious conversations, that they would fail to listen to each other, and passionate conversations could quickly become screaming matches. In this example, I would prefer for one partner to have their placement in Fire and the other, in Air or Earth.
